The programme -  UNITE as one, INSPIRE one another, BELIEVE anything is possible aims to rehome by providing supported living accommodation in Bancroft House , rehabilitate and reconnect veterans and their families regardless of whether they recently left the army or left a long time ago.

We also support veterans who have left, or are still in the criminal justice system. Using a peer mentoring programme, we help them to rebuild their lives and find jobs.

With our combined lived experience and our person led approach to the programme we are striving to help veterans and their families overcome barriers that restrict aspects of their lives.

  • Wellbeing support – guidance, signposting, and access to mental health and emotional wellbeing resources

  • Practical help – support with day-to-day challenges, forms, services, and finding the right organisations

  • Community activities – group sessions, workshops, events, and social opportunities

  • A welcoming environment – somewhere people can feel understood, valued, and part of something positive

Why They Matter

  Supporting Veterans in Custody

Healthier Heroes CIC is committed to ensuring that veterans are not forgotten when they enter the criminal justice system.

Many former service personnel face complex challenges that can lead to involvement with

the courts or time in custody, including mental health difficulties, trauma, substance misuse, homelessness, and a lack of consistent support after leaving the Armed Forces.

Our prison work exists to address these issues and provide veterans with the help they need to rebuild their lives.

Within custodial settings, we work directly with veterans to offer tailored wellbeing and practical support. We recognise that many veterans in custody may feel isolated, misunderstood, or disconnected from their identity as a member of the Armed Forces community.

Our approach is centred on dignity, respect, and understanding, ensuring that veterans feel listened to and supported throughout their time in prison.

We support veterans to access mental health and wellbeing resources, develop coping strategies, and begin planning for a more stable future. Where appropriate, we also help individuals reconnect with veteran-specific organisations and pathways of support.

A key part of our prison work is focused on resettlement and transition back into the community. We understand that leaving custody can be a high-risk time, particularly for those without strong support networks.

Healthier Heroes CIC helps veterans to prepare for release by linking them into housing services, employment and training opportunities, community hubs, and ongoing wellbeing support.

Through this work, we strive to provide hope, structure, and a renewed sense of belonging for veterans in custody.

By offering consistent support and building trusted relationships, we help individuals take steps toward recovery, reintegration, and a healthier future.

Through outreach, we connect directly with individuals in local communities, including veterans and their families, offering practical guidance, wellbeing support, and signposting to the right services.

Our outreach work helps to identify issues early, build trusted relationships, and provide people with a pathway into ongoing support through our hubs and partner organisations. This work is especially important because it reduces loneliness, removes barriers to accessing help, and ensures that no one is left behind, particularly during times of crisis or transition.

We are currently supporting over 300 veterans and family members across the North West, delivered by an amazing team led by Adam, Collette, and Jim, whose dedication ensures that meaningful support is available when and where it is needed most.

Our outreach team provides assistance across a wide range of areas, including ,

  • Benefits advice

  • Family support
